Roundup of 2025! 🔄

In a slightly different format to the usual Roundup, read on for an overview of last year's highlights, a summary of the achievements made by the local activist network and what lies ahead in 2026. Last year, Republic local activists didn’t just talk about the monarchy - they made it visible on streets, in town squares, and outside royal palaces.

Protests, Stunts and Outreach across 2025

Last year started with a scathing report from local anti-monarchy activists around the UK estimating police forces have spent at least £1 million to make the switch to Charles’s new crown logo. This revelation was swiftly followed by a bold protest in Middlesbrough, where the North East group reacted quickly to a last minute visit from Charles to the Town Hall. By March, Republic's campaign was front and centre at Commonwealth Day as protesters gathered outside Westminster Abbey alongside Republic's infamous mascot, Chuck the Rex.

May kicked off with a busy day of outreach at Republic Day in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff with fantastic speakers and performers. In Hexham, activists staged a small but mighty protest that turned heads in the market square for Camilla's visit, while Lancaster hosted a “Ditch the Duchies” action right outside the symbolic HQ of Lancaster Castle - sparking debate about Charles and the Duchy of Lancaster. Republic supporters then faced difficulty at Trooping the Colour, but managed to get media coverage and visibility at one of the biggest events of the year.

After a successful protest for Trooping the Colour in June, hecklers in Newmarket challenged Charles on the Duchy and his treatment of garden workers. Then came a giant invoice stunt outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, which highlighted Republic's Half Billion Royals campaign in response to the royal finances report. At the Ceremony of the Keys and Garden Party in Edinburgh, activists not only planned a protest for the royals arrival, but managed to put together an eye catching stunt that was seen by thousands in Scotland and beyond.

In September, following a fantastic pop-up stunt in Dartmoor from the Devon Group, activists prepared to have a presence at the Make Them Pay march and Stop Trump protest. These two events were key in making sure our anti-monarchy message was a part of understanding other crises unfolding.

In October, fresh revelations about Andrew's involvement with Epstein led to some more quick fire stunts. Firstly, a banner drop outside Royal Lodge highlighted the secrecy surrounding Charles, William and Andrew in the scandal. Shortly following this stunt, a heckler in Lichfield made huge waves across the media challenging Charles directly outside the Cathedral in Lichfield.

Alongside these headline-grabbing protests and actions, local groups ran many street stalls and leafleting sessions in towns and cities across Britain from Chorley and Blackpool to Brighton, Canterbury, Exeter, Birmingham, York, Leeds, and Wakefield and so many more. Every conversation, every leaflet handed out, was a step toward the Republic that is coming soon.

2025 Achievements 🎉

2025 was a fantastic year for Republic and our local activist network was a huge part of that. You helped in getting:

  • 600+ media mentions featuring local activists on radio, in newspapers, and on TV 🗞️
  • 55+ local group events on top of Republic’s national protests and actions 🗓️
  • 1200+ activists in the local network for the first time 📈

None of the above could have happened without you!

Looking Ahead - what's coming up in 2026?

There will be more campaigns, actions and protests to get involved with that Republic are announcing soon. Last year started with a quick-response protest to an announcement, and one of the best ways you could support Republic's campaigning is by getting involved in the local activist network to help more of these happen.

Would you consider becoming an Ambassador? Republic’s local activism network is crucial for reacting to royal visits, planning stunts, and hitting outreach events nationwide. Without organised ambassadors in local groups, this becomes much harder.

This year, expect:

  • More actions, stunts, and protests 💥
  • New Activism Roundups featuring spotlight interviews with Ambassadors and volunteers, deep-dive articles on local groups, and behind-the-scenes looks at the activist network 🎙️

Save the dates - key activist events coming soon:

A HUGE thank you to those who took action last year. I hope you were able to take the time to reflect over the festive period on your incredible activist achievements and feel refreshed to hit the ground running in 2026!

And a massive thank you to our members who make all of the above possible.

See you on the streets and have a fantastic new year,

George McNaughton Ellis
