Republic’s mission is founded on a belief in equality.  This is one reason why we are fully committed to equality, diversity and inclusion throughout our campaign.

We know that accepting and embracing difference and diversity is the right thing to do and that an inclusive approach brings huge strength to the movement.  Through this commitment we can draw on a wide range of skills, experience, values and perspectives.

If you support Republic’s mission, we support your opportunity to get involved.

Whatever your identity, wherever you might be from, whatever your background or other beliefs, if you share Republic’s values and support our mission we welcome and encourage your support and involvement in the campaign.

Republic’s commitment to diversity and equality extends right across the organisation, including staff, volunteers, directors, members, supporters and anyone we come into contact with during the course of our activities.

This commitment includes encouraging and nurturing an inclusive and accepting culture within the organisation, being pro-active in ensuring our teams are diverse and balanced and making sure everyone feels welcomed and valued regardless of our individual identities or backgrounds.

In keeping with this commitment and with current legislation, Republic works to ensure our various teams and our wider membership reflects a fair representation of black and minority ethnic groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, people with disabilities, people of all ages and people from different regions of the UK and from across the socio-economic spectrum, as well as maintaining a gender balance.  Republic also seeks to fairly represent diversity in political and religious beliefs and identities.

Policy

Republic has a comprehensive equal opportunities policy and a simple statement of principles which underlines our belief in equality.

Our equal opportunities policy recognises that discrimination can be direct or indirect and takes place at both institutional and personal levels. Republic recognises and believes that such discrimination is unacceptable and is committed to ensuring that its policies and practices provide equal treatment for all in terms of employment of staff, work with volunteers, relationships with members and supporters, and in all aspects of activity.

Republic has a general commitment to acceptance of everyone without judgement.  Our equal opportunities policy specifically identifies the following areas that need particular care and attention to protect against discrimination and ensure equal opportunities and diversity:

  • Age
  • Class
  • Disability
  • Mental health
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identity
  • Religion
  • HIV status

Review and governance

Diversity is a standing item on the board’s agenda and the weekly staff team agenda.  The board and the CEO are responsible for ensuring diversity, equality and inclusion are promoted in policy and practice at all times.
