Outreach at Durham Miners Gala, Anti-Monarchy Stunts in Kent & Suffolk

This summer just keeps ramping up with anti-monarchy activism - check out the latest actions from across the country by supporters, making their voices heard. If you're feeling inspired, now’s the time to get involved!

Republic at Durham Miners' Gala

The North East has been a hot-bed of anti-monarchy activism already this year with multiple protests to royal visits in Middlesbrough and Durham, and in July a return to Durham Miners Gala in 2025!

This year we brought a powerful new marching banner, generously crafted for Republic by renowned trade union banner-maker Ed Hall.

"The new banner was fabulous and the words on it describe exactly the sort of change we are looking for. The crowd really took to it." ~ Gillian, Republic Supporter.

The reception this year was very positive and many leaflets and stickers made their way through the crowds of the gala, with our message popping up everywhere. If you'd be interested in supporting this event next year in 2026, make sure to get in touch at [email protected].

"Some of the people I spoke to were enthusiastic about abolishing the monarchy and said so in very blunt terms.  Others were more on the fence but were happy to talk to us so I think our presence makes a difference." ~ Christine, Republic Supporter.

Activists Ambush Charles in Deal at Walmer Castle

With less than 24 hours notice, Republic Kent activists Robert and Alison sprang into action when Charles visited Walmer Castle in Deal. With their “Democracy Not Monarchy” banner and Republic T-shirts, they swiftly intercepted the royal motorcade as it left the Castle.

"The windows were open and he was looking directly at us...and before he could realise he had been kippered, he waved at us..." ~ Alison, Republic Supporter.

These quick, visible actions make it harder for the royals to stage unchallenged public appearances and show the public and media that there’s an alternative voice.

"You don't need a crowd to make an effective protest. Kent Republic are busy planning more actions." ~ Robert, Kent Ambassador.

Charles Targeted by Public in Newmarket

📽 Watch the full video of the confrontation! 📽

Local supporters from Suffolk challenged Charles as he engaged with members of the public, calling him out on the private income from the Duchies and challenging him on the eye-watering Half Billion pounds cost of maintaining his family.

"It felt incredibly empowering being able to ask Charles an important question whilst looking him in the eye knowing that the record might be shared more widely." ~ Karen, Local Republic Supporter.

This action disrupted the usual mainstream media bias that accompanies events like these propping up the Royals PR at visits which are seeing fewer people turnout than usual.

"It's a really easy action to do... put your question to him and you've got the video!" ~ Phil, Local Republic Supporter.

This action has since been taken up by The National and shared on numerous media outlets.

Royal visits everywhere now face Republic protests, banner drops, stunts and even one-person protests regularly, questioning the royals and their relentless PR. Who knows where we will pop up next...

A huge thank you to those supporters featured above taking action - maybe it will be you in the next activism roundup?

See you on the streets!
