Campaign group Republic has welcomed new research by Royals Costs Watch that shows the cost of Lord Lieutenants increasing to well over £2 million per year.

The latest data has been obtained through freedom of information requests.

Lord Lieutenants are the King's personal representatives in each county. They are a purely ceremonial role and their costs make up part of the British taxpayers' annual contributions to the monarchy.

Royals Costs Watch is a social media platform highlighting the various expenses that make up the half a billion pound a year cost of the royals.

Republic's own research has detailed how the annual cost has risen to at least £555m.

Republic CEO Graham Smith said today:

"The cost of the royals keeps going up and up."

"Lord Lieutenants are feudal relics, meant to take on ceremonial duties that the royals can't be bothered to undertake."

"There's no reason that £2 million worth of taxpayer money needs to be spent on them. It's that simple."

"This all comes as the cost of the royals is rocketing past half a billion per year."

"We've got the Chancellor planning budget cuts and children in poverty up and down this country, but for some reason the monarchy is getting more and more funding as each day goes on."

"This is one cost the royals could pay for themselves. Or we could scrap the Lord Lieutenants overnight and no one would notice."

"The royals are scamming us out of our own cash. Time for them to go."
