The government's estimated £72m cost of the coronation is likely to be 'way off', campaigners have said.

Campaign group Republic called out the cost at the time, saying it was an appalling waste of money during a cost of living crisis.

The group has pointed out that £72m could pay for 27 million school meals instead of one vanity parade for Charles. Yet the real cost is likely to be far higher.

The figure released by the culture department (DCMS) covers that department's costs and the cost of policing met by the Home Office. It doesn't include costs met by the Ministry of Defence.

Reports following the queen's funeral in 2022 showed Transport for London, the Greater London Authority, other local councils and the London Fire Brigade were among many tax funded institutions having to spend millions on the event.

The coronation is unlikely to have had any significant impact on the UK economy while news reports included global coverage of unlawful arrests of peaceful protesters.

Polling at the time showed only 9% were excited by the event.

Speaking for Republic, Graham Smith said today:

"The coronation was a pointless, archaic parade that happened because Charles wanted it. There was no need for it, only 9% were interested in it according to polls at the time."

"At a time when so many people are struggling with the cost of living crisis, it is shameful that Charles insisted on this pointless extravaganza."

"£72m could pay for twenty seven million free school meals. Instead we throw it at Charles, who already costs us half a billion pounds a year."

"Adding up all the other costs is difficult, but it's likely to tip the total bill over £100m, with no real return in economic benefit."

"There are millions living in poverty, while Charles gets huge tax breaks and a personal income from the state owned Duchy of Lancaster. Why is he not paying for his own parade?"

"Claims of economic benefit from big royal events have been debunked. There is no evidence for it, while the media coverage included the shocking scenes of police arresting scores of peaceful protesters."

"The coronation was a poor advert for the UK, at a great cost to the taxpayer."
