Campaigners have dismissed the announced US visit by Charles as a humiliation for king and country.

Campaign group Republic has said the decision highlights the impotence of our head of state, and that Charles is willing to debase himself if told to do so by government.

Speaking today Graham Smith said:

"Trump is widely disliked in the UK, and he has singularly failed to support the UK's interests or the so-called special relationship."

"Time and again Trump has offended Britain, the British people and our military. Yet our head of state is happy to head over their for a jolly, a spectacle that will only play to Trump's ego."

"We keep hearing about the royals' soft power. Yet that hasn't delivered. Two state visits from Trump to the UK, meetings with William, and still Trump insults us and attacks us."

"This visit will only humiliate Charles and the UK, demonstrating our lack of strength and courage and our inability to say no to Trump."

"The monarch is impotent and useless. We need an independent head of state, one who isn't running the country, isn't just the PM's puppet, but represents the country at home and abroad."

"We need someone who understands and can speak for the British people. All we get next month is two billionaires flattering each others' egos."
