This is an external event organised by Haywards Heath Humanists

Join us to hear from Graham Smith on his campaigning to replace the monarchy with an elected head of state, and to explore humanism's impact on political beliefs, major reforms, and individual activism.

Humanists can have a wide range of political, ideological, and partisan views. But are there certain political causes humanists are, or should be, more likely to support? From a constitutional religious monarchy, to a parliamentary bishops’ bench, and our education system, the structure of the UK state has many vestiges of Christian privilege. How might political and democratic reforms affect the ability of the humanist movement to advance common causes? What does current research tell us about the political beliefs of humanists?

Our speaker

Graham Smith is the CEO of Republic UK, a campaign group which leads the calls to replace the monarchy with an elected head of state and a more democratic political system. Graham is an activist, the author of Abolish the Monarchy: Why we should and how we will, a regular advocate for republicanism in the media, and in May 2023 was arrested for planning a peaceful protest against the coronation of King Charles.
