Street stalls are one of the most effective ways to engage the public, build local support, and grow the anti-monarchy movement. Whether you're a seasoned activist or setting up your first stall, this guide will help you make the most of your time on the street wherever you are.
🎯 Why organise a street stall?
- 💬Start conversations about the monarchy and democratic alternatives.
- 📒Share leaflets and materials that inform and persuade the public.
- 📋Engage people directly by signing up to get involved with your local group as well as Republic.
- 👋Show visibility and presence - remind people that the anti-monarchy movement is growing!
What You'll Need
-
A lightweight folding table or small stall table.

The traditional wallpaper paste table you probably have at home is ideal. Lightweight, a good size for your pitch and there is space to store your resources inside for easy transportation.
-
Yellow Table Cloth

The yellow branding is important; it is associated with the Republic message and makes a bright and eye-catching foundation for your stall. You can use a yellow throw, bedsheet or yellow fabric can be purchased by the metre. Think about the size of your table. Your cloth wants to cover the top and drape over the front but not too big that you create a trip hazard either for yourself or people visiting your stall.
-
Clothes pegs

These are a great resource for your stall. Wood or plastic are fine - you probably have them at home already! Great for securing your yellow cloth, and resources. If they are yellow then a bonus - but any colour will do.
-
Elastic bands

Lightweight elastic bands are useful for securing your leaflets. Even a light breeze can cause havoc with unsecured flyers so always have a few with you!

- Sweets: Everyone loves a freebie, and sweets are an ideal offering. Stickers are available on Republic's shop (and in street stall packs sent to Ambassadors) and these are also great for engagement.
- Republic Placards: The Not My King placards are very useful for identifying who you are. They also convey a sense of action which is useful for engaging people who want to get involved in activism.
- Interactive activity: A fun game or quiz can be a very effective way to engage with your audience. Get creative!

🗣️How to engage with the Public
- Be friendly and approachable - a smile goes a long way!
- Start with a simple line: “Hi! Have you heard about Republic?” or "Should we Abolish the Monarchy?"
- Listen first, then share your perspective.
- Use open questions to invite discussion: “Do you think the monarchy still makes sense today?”
✅ Do’s and Don’ts
DO:
- Stay calm and polite - even if challenged.
- Keep the tone positive and hopeful about Republic's vision and alternative.
- Offer leaflets to passers-by with no pressure.
- Take photos (with consent) to share on social media.
DON’T:
- Argue aggressively or get drawn into shouting matches - remember, we don't need to persuade the die-hard monarchists to succeed with our strategy!
- Block pavements or entrances to buildings or businesses.
- Leave the stall unattended. It is good practice to have at least 3 people taking part in a street stall.
📍Choosing a Good Spot
- High footfall areas like town centres, markets, or near transport hubs.
- Usually public land is fine to set up a street stall, but if you are concerned, check if you need permission from the council or landowner.
- Avoid areas where other groups are already active as you will then be in competition!
📸 After the Stall
- Share photos and a short write-up with the Republic team - your street stall can then be in Republic's Activism Roundup for supporters to see!
- Follow up with new sign-ups. Invite them to your next meeting or action by engaging with them on the Local WhatsApp group.
- Reflect on what worked and what could improve next time with a debrief. Often good to do at a pub or cafe after.
