When April 17, 2025 at 8:30am 3 hrs
Where Durham Cathedral United Kingdom

On Thursday 17th April, Republic will be protesting the Royal Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral. Come and join us from 8.30am!

Charles will be attending the ceremony, handing out £5.50 in Maundy Money, despite the royals costing us half a billion pounds per year.

Since the launch of our Ditch the Duchies campaign, we've uncovered that the royals are taking over £50 million in public money from the Duchies, despite them being public land.

This medieval ceremony portrays the royals as compassionate benefactors rather than beneficiaries of an unequal system through the Duchies.

This underlines how tone-deaf the royals are. Handing out a fiver with one hand, while taking hundreds of millions with the other. It's time to protest. It's time to abolish the monarchy. Pledge to protest NOW.

With the service set to start at 10.00am, join us from 8.30am to make sure we're in position before Charles arrives. Specific location details are below.

This will be Republic's last protest before Republic Day on May 10th, so if you're heading to that as well, make sure to pledge to protest NOW.

Republic's protests are good-natured and a lot of fun. Come and join people from around the UK to protest against the monarchy, to challenge the royals over their use of Duchy money and to tell the world: we're not a nation of royalists.

We'll see you in Durham on the 17th April!

This is what people are saying about Republic protests!

Thanks for organising. I went by myself, didn't know anyone. It was really well organised . Obviously the organisers didn't have time to make a point of talking to everyone who turned up but it was really easy to join in. Two trollies full of placards to help ourselves to. Bigger banners unfurled by organisers. I was made to feel really welcome , plenty of people happy to talk and Graham and George were very accessible to ask questions of about the procedure of the day. Also the huge dinosaur was impressive and a great symbol , quite noticeable. A Tyrannosaurus Rex named Chuck The Rex . Quite humourous and suitably belongs in a museum. Anyone wanting to go should not feel out or place.
It was great being with so many interesting people and sharing our thoughts. It made me feel part of the campaign.
I enjoyed talking to other people who felt the same way as me.
I enjoyed doing something for a cause with like-minded people. Good organisation of the protest and coordination of volunteers.
There was a real sense of community - I came alone but felt very welcomed by all!
I enjoyed meeting other Republic members, feeling part of a movement. I was also pleased that the protest was mentioned in the BBC website report of the event.
It was great to hear encouragement from tourists who were anti-monarchy. It's always good to meet up with Republic members I have met before, and those I haven't!
