Anti-monarchy campaign group Republic has dismissed Reform's plans to put a portrait of Charles in every school as a 'silly gimmick', while pointing out the royalist party is likely to politicise the monarchy.
The Reform Party has announced that if it wins power they will insist every state school flies the Union flag and displays a portrait of the King.
Speaking for Republic today, Graham Smith dismissed the gimmick but welcomed the politicisation of the monarchy.
"This silly gimmick confuses patriotism with authoritarian nationalism. Patriotism is a love of your country, your community and neighbour, a wish for our nation and all those who live here to live well, in safety and with the freedom to reach their potential."
"Patriotism is not an obsession with flags and corrupt princes. It's about the lives of the people who live on these islands."
"Reform's claims of attacks on free speech ring hollow if they want to insist school kids are indoctrinated on the faux virtues of monarchy and authoritarian nationalism."
"They should be careful what they wish for. I would welcome nothing more than the politicisation of the monarchy."
"Reform is going to increasingly attach royalism to their brand of right wing politics. That's going to politicise the monarchy more than ever and drive down support."
