Anti-monarchy campaigners from around Europe will be gathering in London on the day of the royal wedding, where they'll be joined by Labour and SNP MPs Emma Dent Coad and Tommy Sheppard.

The MPs will be speaking at the International Republican Convention, hosted by the Alliance of European Republican Movements (AERM).

The AERM represents campaigns from the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

Graham Smith, speaking for the UK's Republic campaign, said today:

"Royal events treat us as spectators, democracy is about being equal participants.  And that's what we should all be when it comes to deciding how our country is run or who our head of state is."

"While some people will enjoy the wedding in Windsor we'll be busy setting out our vision for a monarchy-free Europe.  This is an opportunity to tell the world that the hype is superficial, that we're optimistic about our prospects for success."

"This isn't going to be won overnight, but it is going to be won.  The monarchy is at odds with our most cherished values, and the end of the Queen's reign will end a long-standing relationship between monarchy and public that has sustained royal support."

"I'm really pleased to welcome Tommy Sheppard of the SNP and Emma Dent Coad from Labour to the conference.  Republicans will disagree on many things, but we're united in our commitment to democratic values."

The Convention runs from 1:30-5:30pm on Saturday May 19, at St Bride Foundation, 14 Bride Lane, London EC4Y 8EQ.
