This summer in July the Republic Edinburgh group made sure to rain on the parade of the royals visiting and their inevitable PR push for the so-called 'royal week' with fantastic actions and protests capturing media attention and getting the important messages seen and heard.
Having been active for 3 years now, it's worth taking a look back over how the Republic Edinburgh group came to be, the successes they've had, and hear from the activists themselves who've been making things happen!

Scottish Coronation
Back in 2023, hot off the Coronation, and all the media coverage that came with the protest and the arrests, the Republic Team headed straight for Edinburgh to organise a protest for their second coronation set to be held in St Giles Cathedral.
The momentum Republic had gathered since the coronation, meant that our protest was very loud and noisy, even being heard in St Giles Cathedral itself, much to the frustration of the royals!
Lots of local voices featured from those who turned up to the protest in the following media coverage. After the coronation, a Republic-supported local group was set up and many of those who attended this protest, got stuck in to join the group.
Royal Week
Republic Edinburgh have organised loads of protests and actions since the Scottish Coronation, with their most iconic ones taking place during "Royal Week" in 2025 and 2026.
In 2026, both royal week actions supported Republic's campaigns, including using our giant 22 metre banner about the Half Billion cost of the royals and then asking the question "What did you know?" to Charles as he passed the protest location referring to the ongoing accountability crisis regarding Andrew and Epstein.
"Both the stunt on the hill and the protest on the royal mile were important as they generate publicity for the cause and show the wider population that we're not all royal worshippers." ~ Neil, Republic supporter and Ambassador.
With Francine from the Edinburgh group having appeared on BBC Scotland and other media outlets many times following these protests and actions. Check out Francine debating a royalist back in 2024 on the radio! 📻
Republic Day in Edinburgh
In 2025 and 2026, the group organised a rally as part of Republic Day, a day of celebration and protest to mark the turning tide of republicanism with events in London and Cardiff too.
In 2025, this took place on Calton Hill with the bright sunshine, and support from Our Republic.
“We feel that public sentiment is largely supportive of change and we’re trying to say, well, look, there is a conversation to be had on ‘do we need this? Do we want it?’ ~ Adrian, Republic Supporter quoted in The National about the first Republic Day in Edinburgh in 2024.
In 2026, the rally took place outside Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament, bringing the issue closer both to the heart of democracy and on the other side of the road, the heart of the problem!
These events brought in new supporters, with political speakers, musicians, poets, and many more, willing to speak out about their anti-monarchy views and the better future ahead without a monarchy.
Looking Ahead...
After a super busy summer, Edinburgh are re-grouping and looking ahead to the rest of the year and 2027. There are lots of plans afoot for more protests, more actions, and more outreach events.
