Just ten days after the cost of the monarchy jumps by more than £45million, campaigners will be protesting as Charles arrives for the Maundy service in Durham.

Anti-monarchy group Republic has committed to continue protesting at royal events, demanding an end to the monarchy.

The campaign group has recently called for the Sovereign Grant to be scrapped as it jumps by more than 53%, an increase of £45.8million a year.

Graham Smith, speaking for Republic, said today:

"Republic is committed to ongoing protests at royal events. This is the third year we have been at the Maundy parade and we will be there every year from now on."

"The monarchy is a corrupt institution that is bad for Britain's democracy and an obstacle to fighting inequality."

"The Sovereign Grant is increasing by £45million pounds, just when services and support are being cut and household bills are rising."

"Charles is continuing to exploit the Duchies for tens of millions in profit at the expense of charities and public services."

"The abuse of public money by the royals is shocking. And in return he patronises people by giving out £5 in Maundy money."

"Republic has no problem with the religious service, it's Charles we protest against. The protest this week, while outside the cathedral, is about the monarchy, not the church."

"Protests and rallies will continue this year, with Republic Day on Trafalgar Square on May 10th and protests at Trooping the Colour in June."

"Britain isn't a nation of royalists. That's what Republic will be showcasing over the next few months through these protests and campaigns. We want people to see how rotten the monarchy is, and how exciting the democratic alternative is."
