The BBC has been accused by anti-monarchists of North Korean style coverage of Trooping the Colour and other key royal events.

The parade on Saturday was met by a large, highly visible and very loud Republic protest. In its live coverage of Trooping the Colour the BBC panned their cameras and edited shots to completely cut out any sign of protest.

The BBC also ignored protesters during the running commentary, instead choosing to misrepresent the size of the crowds and give the false impression of a nation of royalists.

Aerial shots of the crowd showed numbers are falling, with huge swathes of empty space outside the palace and along the Mall.

Republic's CEO, Graham Smith, has written to Hannah Wyatt, Managing Director of Factual Entertainment and Events at BBC Studios Productions to condemn the coverage.

Graham Smith said today:

"Whether in its news output or live events productions, the BBC is required to be impartial and balanced. When covering these events they must cover them as they happen, not edit out uncomfortable truths."

"Over the past two years we've seen a consistent pattern of the BBC simply editing out any sign of opposition to the monarchy. The coronation, the Commonwealth Day ceremonies and Trooping the Colour have all faced growing protests. The BBC has studiously ignored them all."

"While some news output mentions these protests, BBC Studios Productions chooses a North Korean style approach. They pan their cameras, choose angles and edit their commentary to completely remove any sight or sound of dissent."

"Support for the monarchy has plummeted over the past decade. A recent Savanta poll showed just 52% prefer a monarchy while a third prefer a republic."

"This weekend was only the second time Trooping has been met by protesters. The protest was bigger and louder than last year, despite disruption from the police."

"Yet the BBC's commentators and presenters, editors and camera operators all colluded with the palace to present an image of an adoring crowd."

"This kind of North Korean censorship must stop."
