Anti-monarchy group Republic has launched its coronation campaign with a run of twenty billboards across the UK, each one featuring the #NotMyKing hashtag. They also carry the message 'Discover the alternative', as the campaign focusses on what will replace the monarchy.
The billboards have been going up this week in England and Scotland, with more planned for Wales in the New Year.
Republic has previously called for the coronation to be scrapped, dismissing it as theatre and PR for Charles.
Protests are planned for the coronation which is set to be held on May 6th next year.
Graham Smith, speaking for the campaign, said today:
"Republic is growing rapidly, our income has jumped sharply and is likely to hit a quarter of a million this year. With support for the monarchy falling and Charles now on the throne, the republican movement is only going to grow louder and stronger."
"These billboards are the latest drive to raise awareness of the serious problems with the monarchy, and the democratic alternative on offer."
"We believe now is the time to start talking about the democratic alternative to the monarchy, a parliamentary republic with a constitutional head of state. This works well in Ireland, Iceland, Germany and elsewhere and will be far better for Britain than the monarchy."
"There is absolutely no need for Charles to spend tens of millions of pounds of public money on his coronation. The whole thing should be scrapped. But as that's unlikely to happen we'll be there protesting against the monarchy."
The billboards, funded by a crowdfunding appeal, will appear in:
