A new Savanta poll shows the public believe the royals knew about the allegations against Andrew before they were made public.
There's a clear majority who believe there should be an inquiry into what the royals knew and when.
The poll, carried out on Thursday last week shows:
- 61% say it's likely the family knew about Andrew's alleged behaviour before it was reported publicly, giving rise to concerns of a cover up.
- And 57% say there should be an inquiry into what the royals knew about the allegations.
- Even the late Queen comes out of the scandal badly, with 56% saying she did too much to protect Andrew
- 71% say they do not believe Andrew's claims of innocence.
The poll also showed a collapse in support for the monarchy. 46% said they supported the institution compared with 39% who didn't.
Speaking for Republic, Graham Smith said today:
"MPs are being told they can't debate the conduct of the royals. Yet the public have made up their minds on this scandal and want answers."
"Clearly there is a widespread suspicion of a royal cover up. And clearly there is a demand for an investigation into who knew what and when."
"These numbers are shocking for the royals. And the longer they leave questions unanswered the more damage they do to their image and that of the UK."
"The issue here isn't Andrew being friends with a criminal, it's whether or not he is a criminal. And to what extent the royals covered that up."
"Over the weekend thousands of people have been emailing Lindsay Hoyle to demand he allow MPs raise questions and debate the royals. There is palpable anger in the country and anger too that MPs are being silenced in the Commons."
"Politicians and media alike need to start recalibrating their approach to this issue. The people are losing interest in the royals, and are increasingly seeing them as a problem to be addressed."
"It's time we saw serious action to hold Andrew, William, Charles and the rest to account."
