Campaigners have called for MPs to lead a renewed public debate on the future of the monarchy, following damaging revelations from Prince Harry.

Speaking for the campaign group Republic, Graham Smith said today:

"Harry has lifted the lid on the royal family and reveals a nest of petty jealousies and in-fighting that only serves to embarrass Britain."

"The idea that this is the dignified part of our constitution has been blown apart. We're told these are people of good character, but that claim simply isn't credible."

"The monarchy is losing support, it is clearly not fit for purpose and does not represent British values or interests. It's time it went."

"There is a clear, dignified and democratic alternative on offer, a parliamentary republic with an elected head of state. With the monarchy in crisis it's time for MPs to step up and start talking openly about that
alternative."
