The Coronation Protest . May 6 . London

Everything you need to know to make your protest an enjoyable and effective day out.

  • Here's the plan

There will be a procession from Buckingham Palace, up the Mall, through Trafalgar Square and down Whitehall to the Abbey. The coronation ceremony will be at 11am.

That means we want you there early! And if you can't be there between 8 and 10am then please do get there when you can, so when Charles returns from the Abbey we have the biggest protest we can.

Republic will stage a single primary protest on Trafalgar Square, plus a number of small groups along the route. See below for how to volunteer to help on the day.

  • We want to be highly visible and make a real impression - not just to those on the ground, but those watching on TV.

Wear yellow - and if you're bringing your own placard make it black text on a yellow background if you can!

This also means if you're not comfortable wearing a jacket or t-shirt with a Republic logo or slogan, you can just wear any yellow jacket or top and be part of the protest crowd!

  • PLACARDS & POSTERS

Feel free to get creative and make your own placard or banner for the protest. Or download and print one from the options below.

If you're making your own placard, here are some useful things to remember: keep it simple, use common slogans like "Not My King" or "Abolish The Monarchy", avoid anything that would cause genuine offence or which makes accusations against certain royals. These might be taken off you. We're aiming to have a sea of yellow, so a yellow placard with black writing is best.

You can print them at home or get them done at a reasonable price at places like Rymans.

The designs here can be used either as a placard at the protest or a poster to put in your window.

Each design is available as pdf and can be printed in full colour or grayscale (black and white)

    LEAFLETS

You can also order batches of leaflets from Republic. See the shop for details.

  • Here’s what you need to know to join the protest in London.

WHAT TO WEAR: yellow! We’d love to see you in our Not My King t shirts, but whatever you go with - make it yellow, so we can present a strong visual in the crowd.

WHAT TO BRING: friends, fun and a sign. And refreshments. You can use our designs or get creative and make your own. It's best to use slogans like "Abolish the monarchy", "Not My King" and so on. Slogans that might offend or which make direct accusations about certain royals might be taken off you.

We have placard designs you can download and print.

WHAT TIME TO ARRIVE: the earlier the better! Aim for 8 or 9am, but we want people to keep turning up all morning so the protest peaks around midday.

    WHERE TO GO: Trafalgar Square

ENGAGING WITH ROYALISTS: We are not here to cause trouble with our fellow citizens who have, for whatever reason, decided to come out in support of the coronation. We are not, as the police like to say, 'disturbers of the peace'. Keep this in mind as you engage with royalists on the day. It’s a bank holiday, enjoy it! Stay calm & respectful at all times. Move away from a situation if you need to.

ENGAGING WITH THE POLICE: Republic has been very firm in responding to the heavy handed policing that we saw after the death of the Queen, and this response has paid dividends! We have assurances that our right to protest will not be interfered with by the metropolitan police. If a police officer does engage with you confrontationally we will be on hand to assist with any problems and more information about that will be available nearer the time.
