The coronation will be met by large protests. That's a promise being made by anti-monarchy campaign Republic.

Speaking for the organisation, Graham Smith said today:

"The coronation is a celebration of hereditary power and privilege, it has no place in a modern society."

"At a cost of tens of millions of pounds this pointless piece of theatre is a slap in the face for millions of people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis."

"We have already been in touch with the Metropolitan police, and we expect them to facilitate peaceful and meaningful protest. We intend to make our presence felt in parliament square as the royal procession passes through to the Abbey."

"Now is the time we need a major public debate on the future of the monarchy. We need broadcasters to step back, to report on what's happening and reflect the complex and diverse views of the British people."

"Support for the monarchy is on a slow puncture, with net approval ratings dropping sharply over recent weeks."

"Anti-monarchy protests will carry one simple message: Do you want Charles or do you want a choice?"
