Scrap the Royal Grant APPEAL

Donate!

Republic is asking you to donate £35 – or whatever you can afford – to challenge MPs to scrap the Sovereign Grant.

MPs are being told by their party leaders to support a massive £50m doubling of the core grant. That cannot be justified when the total annual cost of the monarchy is well over half a billion pounds.

When schools, hospitals and prisons are at breaking point – when people are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis – why are MPs throwing more money at Charles and his family?

Aim

To see the Sovereign Grant challenged in parliament, to put the government on the spot and raise the question of why the royals cost us all so much.

Follow the money. End the monarchy.

We want the monarchy abolished. One reason is that it’s corrupt and secretive. The huge half-a-billion-pound annual cost is a symptom of that abuse of public money. Follow the money, challenge the secrecy, end the monarchy.

What Republic will be doing - with your support!

As MPs debate the bill to increase the Sovereign Grant, Republic will be lobbying them to speak up against the massive handout. They can speak in debates, ask questions of ministers and write to the government raising concerns.

Donate!

Already more than 3,500 emails have been sent to MPs!

There’s plenty you can do too. Write to your MP, challenge their replies and demand answers. The more emails and letters they get the less they can ignore the issue.

Your donation will be well spent:

Lobbying politicians

The government is rushing the changes through, so the lobbying work will continue after the increase has been voted on.

Research, online tools and video content will mean you and Republic can do more.

Media

The media will play a crucial part in the debate. Republic will be launching a new Sovereign Grant report, detailing the nonsense of the scheme and the dishonesty of the royals and MPs in defending it. The report will inform and spark debate in the media and beyond.

Social media

Social media is increasingly where debates take hold and influence the public. Republic will be putting more time and investment into our social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Bluesky and TikTok, as well as developing new content for YouTube.

Protests and Activism

Activists will be out and about again, challenging the royals over their costs, dropping banners at key sites and protesting at major royal events. Organising and equipping protests costs time, money and a lot of effort from staff and volunteers.

Their weak spot

Royal costs are a key weakness for the royals. When the Irish president costs just £4m a year it cannot be right that Charles and his family run up a bill of more than half a billion pounds. The Sovereign Grant is an issue that drives this point home – even after MPs have voted on it the grant will become a symbol of royal greed and political cowardice.
