Royal 'veto' must be scrapped
Republic has responded to a report from MPs into Queen's and Prince's consent by calling on the effective royal veto to be scrapped.
Under current rules any new law that affects the private interests of the Queen or Prince Charles must be sent to the palace for consent. The process is entirely secretive and gives the royals the opportunity to insist on changes to laws so they are more favourable to their interests.
While there is no evidence an entire law has been vetoed the number of laws that give preferential treatment to the Duchy of Cornwall suggest the veto has allowed the royals the opportunity to influence legislation.
Republic has previously called on the veto to be scrapped and welcomes the MPs' report.
