MP's call for royals to move out 'absolutely right' say campaigners

8 June 2018

Calls by Labour MP Emma Dent Coad for the royals to move out of Buckingham Palace are 'spot on' according to campaign group Republic.  The group has said taxpayers need to 'take back control' of royal palaces and open them up as major tourist sites.

Graham Smith, speaking for Republic, said today:

"The palace is in a dreadful state of disrepair because of poor management by the royal household throughout the Queen's reign."

"This is a public building and the public have been let down. We now face a huge £369m bill to fix the damage done by years of neglect."

"It's absolutely right that the taxpayers take back control and open up the palace to tourists."

"The idea the royals boost tourism is nonsense, but we might make money out of the palaces if the royals move out."

"By turning the palace into a world-class art gallery and museum we will ensure it pays for itself and makes a return on the huge investment taxpayers have been forced to make."

"We do not owe the royals palatial accomodation - it's time they all moved out and found their own homes to live in."
