This is a birthday not a coronation

5 November 2018

Campaign group Republic has called for fair and balanced media coverage of Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday, or risk prematurely crowning King Charles.
This follows escalating media coverage of Charles in the run up to his 70th Birthday, his depiction as ‘King in waiting’ and ‘shadow King’, and reports that the Queen could soon abdicate or choose to make Charles Prince Regent in a matter of years.
All this while polls show 46% would prefer 'someone else' to succeed the Queen while only 37% want Charles to be King. Support for the monarchy could fall by as much as 38% if a future King Charles was known to be influencing government policy.
A Republic spokesperson said today:
“This is a birthday, not a coronation. The media should draw a clear line between the two.”
“Polls clearly show the British public don’t want Charles to follow the Queen as monarch, yet this is given very little airtime.”
“Charles has recently been referred to as a ‘shadow King’, quietly taking over from the Queen. Any future head of state worthy of serving the British people should step out of the shadows and face proper scrutiny – both in the media and at the ballot box.”
“King Charles is just around the corner and we should be having a wide-ranging national debate about our country’s future, not a coronation by default.”
“Those suggesting Charles might take the throne in 2019 need to challenge the status quo and recognise the democratic alternatives to the monarchy that are supported by millions.”
“Hereditary public office goes against every democratic principle. If Charles is to become King, we must first have a serious debate and a public vote.”
“Happy Birthday Charles. But don’t mistake a birthday for a coronation.”
