Graham Smith, CEO of the UK's Republic campaign, will be discussing the abolition of the monarchy with Australian academic Professor Jenny Hocking.
Hosted in collaboration with Labor for an Australian Republic.
Support for the monarchy in the UK has fallen sharply in recent years, as low as 45% at the start of 2024. Support among those under 50 is falling even further.
Meanwhile the republican movement is growing rapidly, hitting headlines, staging protests and challenging the monarchy over its corruption.
Come and find out why the monarchy isn't just wrong for Australia, but bad for the UK. Hear the principled arguments, the passionate defence of democracy and the scandalous failures of the royal household.
Meet Graham Smith
Graham has been leading the Republic campaign for 20 years. He has appeared on countless news programmes across the UK, around the world and in Australia. Last year his book, Abolish The Monarchy: Why We Should and How We Will was published by Penguin. On the day of the coronation in London Graham hit the headlines around the world when he and his colleagues were unlawfully arrested before having the chance to protest.
Graham is also an Australian citizen and has spent many years living in Melbourne. He has a deep connection to Australia and is keen to see Australia - and all Commonwealth realms - take that important step in becoming a republic.
