More than one in four (27%) Brits now support abolishing the monarchy. Support for retaining the monarchy stands at just 60%, well below the 70-75% previously reported from across the polling industry over the last ten years.

These figures come from a new YouGov poll carried out over the weekend for anti-monarchy group Republic. The results included:
40% of those under 25 want the monarchy abolished. Across all age ranges that figure stands at 27%.
Labour voters are also evenly split, with 44% wanting to keep the monarchy compared with 43% favouring abolition.
Graham Smith, speaking for Republic, said the figures were encouraging.

"When looked at alongside other polls in recent years, it appears support for the monarchy is on a slow puncture."

"Just ten years ago monarchists were consistently boasting that three quarters of the population supported the royals, now support stands at just 60%."

"The Queen is the monarchy, the monarchy is the Queen and it's the Queen who continues to sustain support for the monarchy."

"That's a huge problem for the royals, because at some point in the next few years she will no longer be there to keep the show going."

"As we approach the jubilee it's time the country started to have a serious debate about the monarchy, what it's for, what it represents and what democratic alternatives are on offer."

"I am confident that sooner than most people might expect, a majority of people in this country will want the monarchy gone."

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 1,754 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 30th April - 2nd May 2022. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
