Republicans accept challenge while monarchists opt for easy life

A common argument from monarchists is that changing to a republic would all be too complicated. Too much like hard work, they say. They ask “what would the country be called?” as if that’s the killer blow to our cause. Some even suggest - quite bizarrely - that we’d have to spend millions changing the stamps and coins and re-branding everything in the country, so it’s better to leave well alone. Others seem to think every piece of legislation ever written would have to be amended.

The Crown Estate myth

In what can only be described as one of the most breathtakingly dishonest pieces of political spin to come out of the Buckingham palace press office the Queen will again tomorrow claim that the money she costs the taxpayer is offset by revenue from the Crown Estate.

Time to scrap the Civil List

We say it time and time again: the cost of the monarchy is a secondary issue. If it was free, the cost to our democracy would still be too dear. But the the truth is that the royal finances are shrouded in secrecy, with millions of pounds being wasted each year. As our ICM poll revealed, the vast majority (monarchist and republican alike) believe the royal finances should be subject to the same scrutiny as MPs’ expenses.

A challenge to monarchists: tell us how the Queen protects us from tyranny

The argument goes like this: The Queen is a stabilising influence, completely impartial and above the political fray. As such, she acts as a safeguard against politicians holding on to power against the wishes of the people.
