A plinth among men
James Gray
14 Aug 2008

The GLA is still refusing to confirm or deny rumours that the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square has been reserved for a posthumous equestrian statue of Elizabeth Windsor. The plinth, as you may know, is currently host to a rolling programme of contemporary art.

The monarchists are delighted, of course – there’s much gloating on the royalist newspaperswebsites. Personally, I think there’s something pretty tawdry about a neo-classical bronze. Not to mention the whiff of fascism they always seem to exude.

So, my question is: what would be a fitting republican sculpture for the fourth plinth? It can be historical, contemporary, figurative or abstract – anything that would effectively represent the republican movement.
