Over a thousand republicans attend 'not the royal wedding' street party
30th Apr 2011Over a thousand republicans attended Republic's "Not the royal wedding" party in central London today.
Party-goers began arriving at 11:30am and continued crowding in to Red Lion Square throughout the day, enjoying food, drink and republican-themed entertainment. Distinguished supporters of Republic, including Gary Younge, Peter Tatchell and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, were among the crowd at the family event, which featured face-painting and a republican magician.
Journalists Jon Snow and Adam Boulton and a crew from "The One Show" visited the party to speak to Republic supporters, as did reporters from around the world.
Republic campaign manager Graham Smith said:
"We were overwhelmed by the number of republicans who made the trip to join in our party. We're absolutely delighted with the event and thank everyone who's helped us organise it."
"We always planned to provide a fun, family event which put forward a positive alternative to the monarchy and that's what we delivered. This marks the start of a new phase in our campaign and the beginning of a bolder, more confident republican movement."
