Challenge the Oath

We believe a legal requirement to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen is discriminatory and unjust. By forcing people to take oaths they do not truly believe we devalue and undermine their importance. We believe there should be a choice of oath for republicans or a single oath which will say something about duty and society, not an allegiance to one woman.

The Challenge the Oath campaign is a political and legal challenge to make that choice a reality.

Take Action

Things you can do to back this campaign:

  1. Write to your MP and ask them to support our Challenge the Oath campaign.
  2. Be part of our legal challenge. If you're in a position to take an oath get in touch.
  3. Make a donation to the campaign.

Monarchist support

Your MP doesn't even have to be a republican to support this campaign. Tory MP and monarchist Peter Bottomley backed our 2008 parliamentary motion calling for an alternative oath for Westminster MPs. He said he supported any proposal to make the oath voluntarily, telling the Mail "We need to make the oath something that people are offered, rather than required to take [...] We should make provision for republicans or separatists [...] people ought to be able to come to Parliament and argue that they don't want the monarchy."
