Campaigning for a democratic alternative to the monarchy

Republic Towns

Republic Towns is about you taking action in your local community, to help build support for a republic right across the country.

A Republic Town is any town, city or borough that can demonstrate a certain level of support for a republic, through Republic membership, political support and campaigning activity.

Republic Towns is about securing real tangible campaigning goals, including a minimum number of paid up members, councillors signed up to the cause and money raised for future campaigning.

  • Republic Towns gives you a clear set of local goals and activities to work on.
  • Republic Towns gives your local campaigning focus and direction.
  • Republic Towns gives you opportunities to meet other supporters, to work together to make a real difference.

The Criteria for a Republic Town

For your town to be declared a Republic Town you need to achieve five of these seven criteria, including the first one.

  1. Have in place an active local coordinator or contact person
  2. Have in your area at least 20 paid up members of Republic
  3. Raise at least £250 for Republic
  4. Have at least three local councillors (from District, Borough or County councils) from at least two different parties signed up to the campaign
  5. Have evidence of an active programme of writing to the local press
  6. Have evidence of local online activity, for example comments and posts on local blogs
  7. Have an online presence, either with an active local Facebook page or a local Republic Blog

When you have achieved these criteria Republic will grant your community Republic Town status and will organise an event in your area.

But it doesn't stop there! We will then want the campaigning to continue, and we'll review the Republic Town status each year.

Here's how it works

  • Register your interest

  • Start campaigning, recruiting help as you go
  • Let us know when you have fulfilled the criteria
  • Republic will then organise an event in your town to mark the declaration of a new Republic Town

Your Republic Town status will be reviewed each year, so be sure to keep on campaigning once you've achieved the criteria!

Is your town organised?

When you register your Republic Town campaign we'll post details here. If you want to get involved check the list to see if anyone in your area is already getting organised.
