- Republic was formed in 1983. It was initially a small group focussed on lobbying MPs and journalists. In recent years Republic has been transformed into a growing membership based pressure group.

- Support has steadily grown over the years, with membership growing by 200% since 2005.
- Surveys and opinion polls show a consistent level of support at between 20% and 30%.
- Supporters of Republic include Will Self, Roy Hattersley, Norman Baker MP, Claire Rayner, Tony Benn, Nick Cohen, Benjamin Zephaniah, Mark Steel, Caroline Lucas MEP, Graham Watson MEP and Michael Mansfield among others (see our Supporters page for the full list).
- Republic attracts support from across the political spectrum, with members supporting Labour, Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives, SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party, Respect and UKIP.
- Republic has growing support amongst members of parliament. This includes members of Labour and the Liberal Democrats, the Commons and the House of Lords.
- Republic is developing a network of campaign groups, based on existing social, religious, political and occupational networks.
- Republic has contacts with republic movements in Europe and throughout the Commonwealth, in countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In April 2005 Republic led the way in forging a formal alliance, Common Cause, with our Australian, New Zealand and Canadian counterparts.
